Cellular blinds

Pleated fabric forming hexagonal air cells — the best-insulating interior blind made, and the one we recommend most for a Featherbrooke kid's room that bakes in summer and chills in a highveld winter.

The energy pitch, kept honest

A cellular (or honeycomb) blind traps air inside its hexagonal profile, and trapped air is insulation. Single cells help take the edge off a mild room; double cells do real thermal work — a genuinely cooler summer room, a warmer winter one, and quieter too, since the cells absorb sound as well as heat. We keep the claims qualitative — comfort and a lower heating and cooling load, not invented percentages — but on a north- or west-facing kid's room, the difference is one families notice within the first week.

Why it's the family-room favourite

  • Top-down / bottom-up operation — privacy at the bottom of the window, light and sky at the top. Brilliant for a street-facing bedroom or a room overlooked from the estate's common walkway.
  • Cordless and motorised operation — the safest interior blind for a nursery or toddler's room, with no chain to reach for at all.
  • The slimmest stack when raised of any blind on the market — useful on a smaller window where a bulky headrail eats into the light.
Specifier note

Blockout cell fabrics give a bedroom genuine darkness with the thermal bonus built in — the combination we spec most often for a Featherbrooke main bedroom or nursery on the western side of the house.

Where it earns its keep

Cellular blinds suit energy-conscious renovations, nurseries and bedrooms that need dark-quiet-warm all at once, and any room where "it's always freezing in here in July" is a running family joke. Skylight and shaped-window versions exist too — the cell structure holds its shape even on an angled stairwell window. It sits at the mid-to-premium end of the range, with double-cell and top-down/bottom-up options at the upper end.

Where we fit this

Cellular blinds are our go-to for kids' rooms and bedrooms on the West Rand's more exposed stands — from Eagle Canyon Golf Estate and Ruimsig through to the older, less-insulated homes of Northcliff and Wilropark.
